Keeping in view the increased housing needs of the flood ravaged Uttarakhand, the Rural Development Ministry, Government of India, has doubled the allocation of housing units in the Uttarakhand under Indira Awas Yojna by 14,000.

Notably, Uttarakhand was allocated 14,012 housing units under Indira Awas Yojna (IAY) for which central allocation was Rs. 78.82 crore for 2013-14. This number is now increased to about 28000. That's an additional 14000 units.

In a separate package, announced earlier, Uttarakhand will get from the Central Government Rs. 336 crore to construct roads. The sum will be allocated under Prime Minister's Grameen Sadak Yojna (PMGSY). In addition, the Central Government has offered to provide additional funds to upgrade such routes not covered under PMGSY in Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts, said Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday.

The Union Government has assured further assistance in rebuilding Uttarakhand, if the need be.
