Haridwar and Dehradun in Uttarakhand to vote on Jan Lokpal referendum soon
Those among you, who have followed the Anna Hazare and team’s Jan Lokpal agitation closely, would already know that, the civil society led by them had conducted in July this year, a referendum in Chandni Chowk—HRD minister Kapil Sibal's constituency —and claimed that 85% of people favoured the Jan Lokpal Bill. Sibal had mocked the survey, saying he was surprised why 100% of people had not supported it.
Team Anna has now planned to conduct similar surveys or referendum, whatever you want to call them, to gauge public perception on the Jan Lokpal Bill across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, ahead of Parliament’s winter session scheduled for late November.
Among the constituencies chosen for the survey are UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s constituency Rae Bareli Uttar Pradesh, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s constituency Amethi Uttar Pradesh, senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh’s constituency Ghaziabad Uttar Pradesh, constituency of Varanasi, Lucknow, Ambedkar Nagar, Mainpuri, Dehradun and Haridwar.
Team Anna plans to have no direct role in the survey and people associated with Hazare’s recent movements would monitor the surveys.
With the surveys Team Anna wants to estimate the people support for the points mentioned in its Jan Lokpal draft by the time standing committee of Parliament starts considering the Lokpal Bill by hearing the views of various groups, including them.
That’s why one important question in the said survey questionnaire asks people if MPs should back the bill and if they should vote for leaders who have opposed it.
Although, Anna Hazare’s Jan Lokpal agitation has gathered much emotional support during and after Anna’s 13 day Fast; it’s very important for you to respond to the survey, if you get an opportunity to, in a non-emotional frame of mind. As many experts, which include academics, politicians and citizens have found serious loopholes in The Jan Lokpal draft prepared by Team Anna. So put your best logical and aware mind forward, if you get an opportunity to take part in the survey.
