Further improving its Borders by improving connectivity to help rapid mobilization of troops and equipments ( and providing better connectivity to local residents), the Indian government is planning to build 11 tunnels in the strategically important road stretches close to the Pakistan and China borders.

Two of these tunnels, will be built in Uttarakhand.

These all-weather tunnels, will be built by the Border Road Organization(BRO); and will be about 89km long.

The road construction wing of the Army, which is collaborating with BRO, is currently busy conducting the feasibility study of a project planned near Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand.

Other projects under feasibility study stage are:

A 12km Zojila and the 6.5km Z Morh tunnels falling in Jammu and Kashmir

Projects, BRO is expected to undertake the feasibility study are:

Another 9 tunnels in J&K, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

That apart, BRO would undertake construction of two tunnels, totaling 25.4km on Balipara-Charduar-Tawang road that would improve connectivity to Tawang region of Sikkim throughout the year. Currently the Army has to depend on helicopters to provision Tawang region.

Two more crucial tunnels have been planned in Sikkim, which are located only 19.3 and 24.6 km distance from the line of control (LoC). Rangpo tunnel in Sikkim that will be only 800meter long, is also expected to be built soon.
